A MOMENT of SILENT MEDITATION on the WORD of GOD

      THE SERMON:  “Overriding Reality”

*    CONFESSION OF SIN - first in silence and then in unison

C: Almighty God, Ruler of heaven and earth, the One whose lovingkindness endures forever, we come seeking Your lovingkindness. We have been ungrateful and unbelieving. Though You made the heavens and the earth, also the sun, moon, and stars; though You keep watch over the nations and guide them; though Yours is the dominion, and You rule over all; though You give food to the hungry, and extend mercy to the downtrodden; though you humble the pride of the arrogant, and confound the wisdom of scholars; despite all this we have doubted Your existence, have questioned whether You really rule, and have not given thanks to You. Forgive us, through the blood of Jesus, the King who died for His people. By the Holy Spirit draw us near to You, and let us live and walk in the joy and security of Your care and lovingkindness. Amen.

*     A HYMN:  #455  I Am Thine, O Lord

*    HEIDELBERG CATHECHISM: Questions 128 & 129

Question 128: How do you close this prayer?

Answer: “For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.” That is: we ask all this of You because, as our King, You are willing and able to give us all that is good, since You have power over all things, and that by this not we ourselves, but Your holy name may be glorified forever.

Question 129: What is the meaning of the little word “Amen”?

Answer: Amen means: this shall truly and certainly be. For my prayer is much more certainly heard by God, than I am persuaded in my heart that I desire such things from Him.

THE SERMON TITLE this morning is Overriding Reality. According to Merriam-Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary, “overriding” means “to dominate or prevail over.” This sermon concerns the last phrase of the Lord’s Prayer, the one about the kingdom, the power, and the glory. It’s also the one that is not found in the best early manuscripts of the Greek NT. But still, it is in many, many ancient manuscripts and is universally included as the closing phrase of the Lord’s Prayer by Christians from the earliest times down to this first Sunday of September 2010. It points to the One who prevails!

PLEASE BE AWARE that anything borrowed from the church premises, especially items from the kitchen area, must be signed out before doing so. Our facilities are being used regularly for ministry, and often equipment is not where it is expected to be when it is needed. Also, anyone who wishes to borrow tables or chairs are to contact the church office to be sure there are no conflicts.

WOMEN’S SUNDAY SCHOOL - If a fresh vision of God could transform Isaiah into the greatest of the Old Testament prophets, what difference could it make in your life if you truly saw the Lord? Often in the busyness of our days and familiar habits we can drift into comfortable complacency and we may need a wake-up call to our heart. We are excited to share this material with you written by Anne Graham Lotz, “I Saw the Lord”, an eight week study. Please join us September 19th as we begin this new class.

PARENTS, IF YOUR CHILD has gone off to college, the office would like to know his/her address, and e-mail address. If your child has returned to college, let the office know if his/her address or e-mail has changed. Thank you.

The Wonderful Cross

When I survey the wondrous cross

On which the Prince of Glory died

My richest gain I count but loss

And pour contempt on all my pride

See from His head, his hands, His feet

Sorrow and love flow mingled down

Did ever such love and sorrow meet

Or thorns compose so rich a crown

O the wonderful cross, O the wonderful cross

Bids me come and die and find that I may truly live

O the wonderful cross, O the wonderful cross

All who gather here by grace draw near

And bless Your name

Were the whole realm of nature mine

That were an offering far too small

Love so amazing, so divine

Demands my soul, my life, my all

We Fall Down

We fall down, we lay our crowns

At the feet of Jesus, the greatness of

Your Mercy and love, at the feet of Jesus

And we cry holy, holy, holy, and we cry holy, holy, holy

And we cry holy, holy, holy, is the lamb

O Praise Him

Turn your ear to heaven and hear

The noise inside, the sound of angels awe

The sound of angels' songs, and all this for a King

We could join and sing, 'All to Christ our King!'

How constant, how divine, this song of ours will rise

Oh, how constant, how divine, this love of ours will rise

Will rise...

Oh praise Him! Oh praise Him!

He is holy! He is holy!

Turn your gaze to heaven and raise a joyous noise

Oh the sound of salvation come

The sound of rescued ones, and all this for a king

Angels join to sing, 'All for Christ our King!'

How infinite and sweet this love so rescuing

Oh how infinitely sweet

This great love that has redeemed

As one, we sing...

Hallelujah, hallelujah. He is Holy! He is holy!

Holy, Holy, Holy

Holy, holy, holy!  Lord God Almighty!

Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.

Holy, holy, holy!  Merciful and mighty,

God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy!  All the saints adore thee,

Casting down their golden crowns

Around the glassy sea;

Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,

Which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.
