Pastor’s Column
So, how was the shore this summer? The Shore–whether it be in New Jersey or Florida, Delaware or North Carolina–is probably the most common and popular vacation site for folk from Leidy’s Church. Why is it so popular? It’s relaxing, refreshing, and has wonderful rejuvenating powers for young and old alike.
The ocean figures prominently in the Bible. Usually it represents humanity. Revelation 17:15 says, “The waters which you saw…are peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues.” In Isaiah 57:20 we are told, “The wicked are like the tossing sea, for it cannot be quiet, and its waters toss up refuse and mud.” Verse 21 adds this trenchant commentary: “‘There is no peace,’ says my God, ‘for the wicked.’”
That relaxing murmur of waves washing over rocks and sand is the sound of a body of water never at rest, always in motion, never free from agitation. While we step out of the uproar of our daily lives to slow down and relax at the shore, the shore itself reminds us that life’s restlessly ceaseless activities continue.
If you’ve ever been at the shore during a hurricane, then you know something of the reality of how frightening the ocean can be when stirred up. Not only is it frightening, but dangerous and destructive and deadly as well. When you think about it, that certainly is true of life also. While much of the time our days may pass by with a regular rhythm that is comforting, we are aware that life’s storms can suddenly blow across our paths to attack us, threaten us, batter us, and make us be ready to give up all hope, to make us question the ability or power of God to protect us, or, sometimes, even result in our wondering if there is a God!
The hurricanes of life come in many different forms. If all one does is listen to talk radio, read the Drudge Report, scan the headlines, and listen to one’s own fears, then it may well seem as if we’re constantly on the verge of a civilization-ending calamities. What will the Iranians do with their nuclear capabilities? Is North Korea really ready to attack other countries? Is the economy set for collapse in the US and around the world? Does anyone have the will and ability to stand against an ever-aggressive force of world-wide terrorism? Has the US bitten into, indeed, consumed and been consumed by, the tempting apple of socialism? How can the perverse descent of public morality be stopped, or should we prepare for absolute moral anarchy and chaos? Where will they build that mosque in New York City, and what does it mean?
We wonder where God is in the midst of all this. Is He anywhere near? Does He know what’s going on? Why doesn’t He do something about all these matters!
Hurricanes come from nearby and within us as well as from events above and beyond us. The visit to the doctor reveals a slow and wasting disease that cannot be reversed, at best only slowed down. In a conversation with friends your tongue gets away from you yet again, to your shame and their hurt. The situation changes at your work place and you’re wondering if you will have a job a month from now, or if you’ll be able to do what’s asked of you. Your child is facing severe difficulties and there’s nothing you can do to help or change it. There’s the anguish of besetting sin and the particular form in which it is manifest to you in your life, of which others may know little or nothing.
We wonder where God is in the midst of all this. Is He anywhere near? Does He know what’s going on? Why doesn’t He do something about all these matters!
It is at points such as these that the Bible’s references to oceans and seas is quite helpful. The single-most defining picture of God’s people facing the hurricanes of life is the crossing of the Red Sea. There is no escape for God’s people: hemmed in by mountainous terrain to the right and to the left, the pursuing Egyptians are behind them, and before them lies the vast expanse of the Red Sea. It is a veritable hurricane of distress, personal and national! You know what happened. They walked through the Red Sea unharmed, preserved and delivered by the intervening power of God.
Psalm 93:3 talks of such times in this way: “The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice. The floods lift up their pounding waves.” It’s not the relaxing sound of a gentle surf of which the Psalmist writes, but the threat of destruction.
Likewise, in Psalm 42:5 the Psalmist asks, “Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me?” He answers himself in vs. 7: “Deep call to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls; all Your breakers and waves have rolled over me.” Here, the surf is not just threatening, it is attacking!
But did you catch the underlying note about those restless, attacking, destructive waves? The Psalmist says they are “Your” waterfalls and “Your” breakers and waves, i.e. they are under the control and direction of God regardless if we can see that such is the case or not.
In Psalm 93 the Psalmist went on to proclaim in vs. 4 that the Lord is mightier than all the violence and threats of the waves of the sea. This theme is repeated over and over again throughout Scripture. We need to hear this for it is the basic teaching about the providence of God that we need to take into account and remember at all times.
In this life we always will be in the midst of the sea of humanity and its continuing restlessness and unsettledness. Periodically, we will experience the turmoil of life whether from external matters or things more personal. At such times we need to rest in, take comfort and hope in, God’s providential ordering of the events of the universe, and the events of each life.
Psalm 77:19, 20 reminds us about God’s way: “Your way was in the sea, And Your paths in the mighty waters, And Your footprints may not be known. You led Your people like a flock.” In other words, in the midst of all that goes on in the world, God is faithfully leading His people, even though they often cannot see what He is doing, cannot see His footprints.
Thank God for summer vacations at The Shore where we can relax and be refreshed. By God’s mercy may we be enabled to trust confidently in Him when the seas of life rage around us, and when the regular rhythm of life is undisturbed, as we recall His providential ordering of all things, confident of His care for us. As the Psalmist reminds us:
He rules by His might forever; His eyes keep watch on the nations;
Let not the rebellious exalt themselves. …
But certainly God has heard;
He has given heed to the voice of my prayer.
Blessed be God, Who has not turned away my prayer,
Nor His lovingkindness from me. [Psalm 66:7,19-20]

September Pulpit Schedule
5th – Overriding Reality – 1 Chronicles 29:10-22; Rev. 15:1-4; Matthew 6:9-15
According to Merriam-Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary, “overriding” means “to dominate or prevail over.” This sermon is on the last phrase of the Lord’s Prayer, the one about the kingdom, the power, and the glory. It’s also the one that is not found in the best early manuscripts of the Greek NT. But still, it is in many, many ancient manuscripts and is universally included as the closing phrase of the Lord’s Prayer by Christians from the earliest times down to this first Sunday of September 2010. It points to the One who prevails!
12th – Why So Effective? – Isaiah 55:6-11; Jeremiah 1:1-8; Acts 8:1-4, 26-39
This is Rally Day! Last year it was the kick-off for our Luke 19 Project. Since then 3,750 Bibles have been printed and sold from those funds. The monies generated from those sales have provided for the printing of sufficient literacy materials so that 450 adults are enrolled in Bible-content literacy classes. Today we are launching another Luke 19 Project so that church planters can now begin work among the Adivasi people. The strategy used by Glad Tidings India to reach groups like the Adivasi is exceptionally effective. Why? What is being done? Come, find out.
19th – Work Out Your Salvation! – 1Samuel 15:10-31; Matthew 5:13-16; Phil. 2:12-18
To get something for nothing can be thought of as a gift; but it can also be understood as receiving what is undeserved. To work at a job is still considered the right way for one to earn wages; a day’s pay for a day’s work. However, when salaries far exceed the perceived worth of the jobs performed, then some of us may detect corruption exuding. Our salvation comes to us as a gift of God and yet this salvation requires us to be fully engaged with God to bring it to completion. Today we’ll see how we, as Christians, are to work out our salvation.
26th – Why Fast? – Leviticus 16:29-34; Isaiah 58; Colossians 2:8-23; Matthew 6:16-18
Jesus tells His disciples how they should approach fasting when they do fast. The apostle Paul tells the Christian community at Colossae why they should not fast. These two very different set of instructions provide the pillars to which any legitimate understanding of fasting must be fastened. One finds the same sort of opposite teachings in our texts from Leviticus (with the command to fast) and from Isaiah (with a reproach for fasting). So, what’s going on? It’s the age-old problem of trying to seek the Lord and do His work by human strength and wisdom.

“Insurance or Assurance”
Selling insurance is a hard task. Insurance simply is not an exciting product. Somehow the people at Geico find creative ways to do just that: sell insurance. By now, we all remember the tag line, “So easy even a caveman can do it”? But the Geico Gecko is even more memorable. I get asked a lot by people if he has an Australian accent. I think it sounds more like British cockney accent than “Aussie”. Despite this speculation, the Gecko’s origin remains a mystery, and that’s part of what hooks us. The company is definitely creative, but what has all this got to do with insurance? Not much at all!
You see, it’s hard to sell a product like insurance. It’s not very gratifying to buy it because you don’t receive anything when you pay. All you get is some peace of mind that if something happens to a possession of yours (car, house, your life, etc) you may possibly receive some money back to make up for what has been damaged or lost. It’s just not a fun payment to make! Many people take out life insurance in case something happens to them so others will get some financial compensation to make up for the loss. Such persons make payments on something they will never benefit from personally.
Let me say clearly that insurance is a wise thing to have! However, it is an idea that is rooted in the “here and now” of this life. It is placing an emphasis on the things of this world. Don’t get me wrong…I am thankful for insurance, but I do think at times we can be too focused on protecting our lives and possessions. As depraved beings we tend to cling to this world. Although I love the idea of heaven, I struggle to maintain an eternal perspective now. So I insure that I will be okay through trusting in my own planning.
Jesus speaks to our earthly focus when He says, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” He told a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.” (Luke 12:15-20).
The rich man in the story had a ‘here and now’ perspective on life. His focus was to insure that he was taken care of. However, what he failed to recognize is that all the plans in the world can’t insure everything. Life insurance never pays out to the one who dies! The honest truth is that tomorrow is promised to no man. However, through faith we can rest in the One who holds the tomorrow of everyman! Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Our faith is an assurance of a spiritual reality (an eternal perspective).
In 100 years time the only thing that will matter is whether you had faith or not. Earthly concerns will mean absolutely nothing then, so why do we give them such precedence in our lives now? We do well to learn from Jim Elliot, the great Christian missionary to Ecuador who was killed while attempting to evangelize the Waodani people. He said, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” This man lived and died with an eternal perspective. So let me ask which is more valuable to you: Life Insurance or Faith Assurance?

Fall Precept Bible Study Class
Join us as we begin our season of Bible study with Part 1 of the book of Matthew. Christ entered the world in a time much like ours—political tension, spiritual hypocrisy and moral decay. Discover the hope of the Messiah and His teachings and gain personal understanding of the fulfillment of God's plan through the life of Christ as we begin a new Precept Bible Study course on September 9, from 9:15 to 11:30 am each Thursday morning, babysitting provided.
Whether you are new to studying God's Word, or just want to discover deeper truths, the Inductive study method is for you. The format of the class is worship, prayer, followed by class discussion, and a video teaching by Kay Arthur, founder of Precept Ministry International. The course book is $16. Contact Verna at 215-679-6850. Our class averages 35-40 women.
Becoming … with Donna Partow
There are only five openings for the women's retreat planned for this October. If anyone would like to attend, you may make a reservation for October 8 through 10 on a first come, first served basis. Please note that the next women’s retreat isn’t scheduled until the fall of 2012, so you won’t want to miss this weekend of teaching and fellowship.
For those of you who wish to be present for Donna Partow's teaching, but are unable to commit to the full weekend, we are extending day passes which include all meals on Saturday for $55. A one night–three meal package for Saturday is $110 per person. Be reminded the cost for the entire weekend, including lodging and all meals is $195.
Please call or e-mail the church office at office@leidyschurch.org with your reservation or questions.
New Sunday School Class
If a fresh vision of God could transform Isaiah into the greatest of the Old Testament prophets, what difference could it make in your life if you truly saw the Lord? Often in the busyness of our days and familiar habits we can drift into comfortable complacency and we may need a wake-up call to our heart. We are excited to share this material with you with you written by Anne Graham Lotz, an eight week study.
Please join us September 19 for a new class “I saw the Lord”.
Monday Bible Study
Ladies Fall Bible Study: Here and Now...There and Then by Beth Moore is a lecture series on the book of Revelation. Beth presents many points of view, allowing women to decide for themselves when the interpretation varies among scholars. This 11-week study begins on September 13 at 6:45 pm in Room 16 (the Confirmation Room). There is a companion listener guide for notes that includes one day of light homework.
Please call Sandy Nase if you have any questions at either 215-721-3800 or 215-234-8728. To order a book, contact either the church office or Sandy. The approximate cost for the book is $12.50.
Judgement House™ is Gearing Up
The Lord willing, another year of Judgement House™ [JH] presentations will take place the last two weekends of October in 2010. A core cadre of folk have been working on the script, room allocation, and other details, but JH is going public soon! Here are some key dates to remember:
September 19th – JH script and video presentation at Youth Fellowship
September 26th – JH practices begin
October 17th – Set construction week begins
October 22nd – Full walk-through/presentation for Leidy’s Church members
October 23rd – First official night of JH presentation to the community
The title of this year’s JH play is Unexpected. Like most American families, the Endicott family keeps a frenetic schedule. There’s no room for the unexpected. Their calendars are booked to max. But the unexpected does happen, and at that point all the plans in the world can’t help address what needs to be addressed.
Why does Leidy’s Church do JH presentations? Because it is a great way to share the truth about Christianity with the community, especially with those who do not believe in Jesus Christ. It provides a great opportunity for our youth and adults to experience being involved in gospel outreach.
We need lots of folk involved. In fact, we need YOU. Talk with Pastor Andrew or stop by the church office to indicate your willingness to be part of the 2010 JH presentation at Leidy’s Church. Actors and actresses are needed, folk to work on set construction are essential, personable guides are at a premium, security personnel help everyone feel and be safe. You can be sure there’s a spot for you.
What we ask all of us to do, starting right now as you read this, is to pray. Without God moving by the power of His Holy Spirit this venture will be fruitless. Pray that the Spirit of God would work in us, and in our community, for Jesus’ glory!
Rally Day Set for September 12th
The new academic year kicks off on the 12th of September! That’s Rally Day and all that we’ve come to associate with it. There will be sausage and pancakes for the Sunday School youth; commissioning of our choirs, worship teams, and musicians; a charge given to our Christian Education personnel; a big balloon send-off; and this year the presentation of the new Confirmation Class that will begin its two year course of study and fellowship.
Summertime is a great time, but it also is good to get back into the swing of things. Rally Day is that starting point for us. The kids in Sunday School will advance to their new grades on that day, and our teachers are looking forward to their new classes.
We will welcome everyone back from the mountains and from the shore and from all places in between. Join in the Rally Day activities–and there will be a special missions emphasis again this year.
Chinese Orphans to Perform
Despite China’s one-child policy, the land has lots of orphans. In 1994 Dr. Samuel Fong founded Living Hope International, an organization that exists to care for orphaned Chinese children. The heartbeat of this Christian organization is to make a difference in the lives of the children under their care. That is why they do what they do.
On October 3rd a group of orphans under the care of Living Hope International will be at Leidy’s Church during the Sunday School. Their home is an orphanage/training center just outside of Beijing. A significant element in the care and training Living Hope International utilizes at the orphanage is music. Music provides a great way to teach and to learn.
Guess what? Yes, we can look forward to these Chinese children presenting classic Chinese music and dance. Though not necessarily ready for the Kimmel Center, these young people are very accomplished and polished in what they present.
Personal testimonies and life stories are part of their program as well. Most have come from very difficult circumstances and can serve as testimonies to the life-changing ministry of Living Hope International.
Dr. Fong plans to be on hand so that he can do a bit of Q and A with those attending this special performance.
Mark your calendar now so you don’t forget to be in the Fellowship Hall during Sunday School on October 3rd. It will be good and you’ll be glad you were there.
Youth Ministry Fundraiser
Parking at the Allentown Fair takes place this year from August 31 through September 6. Each year our youth fundraise through working for Colonial Parking at the Allentown Fair. The monies raised go towards youth events and help defray the costs associated with some of our ministries and events such as retreats, camps, Dare2Share, and Judgement House for example. As an added incentive to our youth to help out, if they cover three shifts this year, they will be able to attend a retreat free of charge.
We rely on the young people and adults from our church family to help out. The big change this year is that we will not be covering the daytime shifts, but in the evenings we will be responsible for both sides of the parking lot. That means we will require 15 parking/flaggers each night, so we will need many youth and adult helpers to fulfill the task. We will also need two adults to fill cashiering spots each night.
Can you help out? Adults and youth 13 years of age and up are welcome. If you can wave a flag, you are fully qualified to help, and the cultural experience is often priceless! Contact Pastor Andrew if you have questions or to see what nights help is still needed.
The Westminster Confession of Faith
[First published in 1647 by the Westminster Assembly called by order of the British Parliament, this confession from its outset has been and remains a foundational doctrinal standard among many Reformed denominations. This month we reprint chapters 9 and 10 which deal with the essential, but controversial, topics of Free-Will and Effectual Calling.]
Chapter 9 – Of Free-Will
1) God has endued the will of man with that natural liberty that it is neither forced, nor, by any absolute necessity of nature, determined, to good, or evil.
2) Man in his state of innocency had freedom, and power to will and to do that which was good and well pleasing to God, but yet mutably, so that he might fall from it.
3) Man by his fall into a state of sin has wholly lost all ability of will to any spiritual good accompanying salvation; so as, a natural man, being altogether averse from that good and dead in sin, is not able by his own strength to convert himself, or to prepare himself thereunto.
4) When God converts a sinner and translates him into the state of grace, He frees him from his natural bondage under sin; and, by His grace alone, enables him freely to will and to do that which is spiritually good; yet so, that by reason of his remaining corruption, he does not perfectly, nor only, will that which is good, but does also will that which is evil.
5) The will of man is made perfectly and immutably free to do good alone in the state of glory only.
Chapter 10 – Of Effectual Calling
1) All those whom God has predestinated to life, and those only, He is pleased in His appointed and accepted time, effectually to call by His Word and Spirit, out of that state of sin and death, in which they are by nature, to grace and salvation, by Jesus Christ; enlightening their minds spiritually and savingly to understand the things of God, taking away their heart of stone, and giving to them a heart of flesh; renewing their wills, and by His almighty power, determining them to that which is good, and effectually drawing them to Jesus Christ; yet so, as they come most freely, being made willing by His grace.
2) This effectual call is of God’s free and special grace alone, not from anything at all foreseen in man, who is altogether passive therein, until, being quickened and renewed by the Holy Spirit, he is thereby enabled to answer this call, and to embrace the grace offered and conveyed in it.
3) Elect infants, dying in infancy, are regenerated and saved by Christ through the Spirit, who works when and where and how He pleases; so also are all other elect persons incapable of being outwardly called by the ministry of the Word.
4) Others, not elected, although they may be called by the ministry of the Word, and may have some common operations of the Spirit, yet they never truly come to Christ, and therefore cannot be saved: much less can men, not professing the Christian religion, be saved in any other way whatsoever, be they never so diligent to frame their lives according to the light of nature, and the laws of that religion they do profess. And to assert and maintain that they may, is very pernicious, and to be detested.
The Bible – Should It be Trusted?
That is the question addressed by the Full Confidence Conference on September 24th and 25th. Held at Church of the Savior in nearby Wayne, PA, and sponsored by Westminster Theological Seminary, the conference will help attendees understand, define, and defend the inspiration, authority, and applicability of the Bible even in our seemingly ever-changing contemporary world.
There are Friday evening meetings from 7 to 9 pm, while the Saturday sessions begin at 9 am and conclude at noon. The speakers are Westminster faculty members, including Carl Trueman whom you may remember from his being with us one Sunday in the 2009 Mission Month. Other faculty member speaking that weekend include Lane Tipton, David Garner, and John Currie.
There is a minimal registration fee of $15. www.wts.edu/fullconfidence is the site for online registrations, or, you may call 1-800-373-0119 and ask for Mr. Peterson.
During the 1970s and 80s there was a battle for the Bible as the issue of the inerrancy of Scripture was contested among evangelical Christians. Thirty years later a new sort of battle is underway about the Bible, along different and more subtle lines, but still causing folk to question the reliability of the Bible. It is difficult for most folk to sort through all the sophisticated language to figure out what’s really go on, and be prepared to stand for biblical truth. The Full Confidence Conference is designed specifically to help you be so prepared.
Rob Wonderling at B&P
Thursday, September 9th, is the date for the fall BMCE Business and Professional Breakfast. Starting time is the usual 6:30 am, with the promise that you’ll be on your way by 8. A full country-style breakfast is served, and you can eat all you want.
The special speaker this fall is Rob Wonderling. Many know Rob from his service as a State Senator from 2002 to 2009. Currently, he serves as President and CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. He and his wife Kristin live in Lower Salford Township with their three sons.
The purpose of the BMCE B&P events is to provide a venue where local Christians can invite friends and colleagues, neighbors and family members, who may have no Christian commitment or only a nominal church affiliation, to enjoy a good breakfast and hear a solid Christian testimony. The speaker usually is a local person who has achieved some measure of success in the business and professional realm.
Rob Wonderling is such a person, and you’re invited to hear what the Lord Jesus has done and is doing in his life. Tickets are $12 and may be obtained by contacting the church office.

SLMT ’10
By the time this Newsletter is in your hands the 29th of August will have come and gone most likely. On that day most of you will have heard a variety of reports from the young and old who made up this year’s Stormer Lake Mission Team. It was a good year, and had enough “surprises” to keep folk on their toes.
This article is simple to say Thank YOU to all those who supported financially, who prayed regularly, who bought more than they intended at the Auction, who gave all sorts of things to the Auction, who were present to encourage the team as it set off back on July 8th, and to many others who did all manner of things to allow another year of ministry to take place in Pikangikum, Stormer Lake, and, this year, Sandy Lake. May God bless you abundantly and continue to give you the desire and opportunity to support His message going forth.
