*   CONFESSION OF SIN: (first in silence then in unison)
        [first used March 16, 1997]
C: Holy and awesome God, in You alone is there light and truth and wisdom. We confess our sin and bondage, our repeated shifting of glory from You to ourselves. Our concern has been to appear spiritual in the eyes of men, yet we have neglected and ignored the work of the Holy Spirit. Indeed we have debated strenuously about theological gnats, while swallowing camel-sized doses of contemporary error. O Lord God, forgive us. By Jesus’ shed blood deliver us from the snares of the devil, and from the tares of our old nature. Wash us from our sin; renew us from within; make us to be Your kin, through the ongoing wonder of new birth and ongoing life, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

THE SERMON TITLE this morning is Quodlibet. It’s that time of year again, time for the annual Quodlibet sermon. In case you’ve forgotten, or have never heard of this phenomenon, here’s what it means. The pastor does not prepare a sermon for Sunday. Instead, in the bulletin is a slip of paper on which attendees may write a question. These slips of paper will be collected just prior to the sermon, then the pastor will take them into the pulpit to read and respond to as many as time allows. The questions can be about anything – that’s what Quodlibet means: ask what you will.
THE SECOND CANDLE on the Advent Wreath is the candle of Faith. When Jesus was born, the faith of God’s people in the promises of God, beginning already in the Garden of Eden, was vindicated. The promise of God is one of grace, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ’s redeeming work and have peace with God. It’s our joy to share the good news about faith in Jesus which brings us to peace with God.
THIS MORNING Leidy’s Church is receiving new members. We wish to welcome the following people into our fellowship. Take time to greet them after the service.

December 18          Family Holiday Concert
December 24         Christmas Eve
Beautiful Star of Bethlehem
Beautiful Star of Bethlehem
Shining afar through shadows dim
Giving the light to those who long have gone
Guiding the Wise Men on their way
Unto the place where Jesus lay
Chorus:
Oh Beautiful Star (Women)
     (Beautiful Beautiful Star) (Men)
Of Bethlehem (Women)
     (Star of Bethlehem) (Men)
Shine upon us until the glory dawns
You are the lamp to light our way
Unto the land of perfect day
Beautiful Star of Bethlehem, shine on
Beautiful Star the hope of light
Guiding the pilgrims through the night
Over the mountains ‘til the break of dawn
Into the light of perfect day
It will give out a lovely ray
Beautiful star of Bethlehem shine on
Chorus:
Beautiful Star the hope of rest
For the redeemed, the good and the blessed
Yonder in glory when the crown is won
Jesus is now that star divine
Brighter and brighter He will shine
Beautiful Star of Bethlehem, shine on
