THE SERMON: “Dark and Stormy Times”
* CONFESSION OF SIN: (first in silence then in unison)
C: O Lord our God, we know that You are righteous altogether. All that You do is right, and all that You purpose shall be accomplished. But, Lord God, we have been buffeted by the stormy seas of life. Our circumstances have dismayed us. We have doubted Your power; we have questioned Your goodness; we have wondered where You are. In our dark hours, we think You have forgotten us. O Lord Jesus, we know this is wrong. Forgive our wavering faith, take away our hopelessness, and deliver us from the tempter’s snare of despair. As You cleanse us, also strengthen us. Make the hope You give us, be a sure and certain anchor for our souls. Amen.
* ASSURANCE OF PARDON: #448 Before the Throne of God Above
* HEIDELBERG CATECHISM: Questions 27 & 28
Question 27: What do you understand by the providence of God?
Answer: The almighty and ever-present power of God, whereby He still upholds, as it were by His own hand, heaven and earth together will all creatures, and rules in such a way that leaves and grass, rain and drought, fruitful and unfruitful years, food and drink, health and sickness, riches and poverty, and everything else, come to us not by chance, but by His fatherly hand.
Question 28: What advantage comes from acknowledging God’s creation and providence?
Answer: We learn that we are to be patient in adversity, grateful in the midst of blessing, and to trust our faithful God and Father for the future, assured that no creature shall separate us from His love, since all creatures are so completely in His hand that without His will they cannot even move.

THE SERMON TITLE this morning is Dark and Stormy Times. Human history is replete with dark and stormy times. Likewise, individual lives can undergo “dark night of the soul” experiences. The ship carrying Paul to Rome is a picture of just such a night – though in this case it was for fourteen nights. All those on board experienced the unrelenting fury of the storm. The situation was very bleak. For them, “all hope of . . . being saved was gradually abandoned.” Some years earlier Peter experienced such a time within his soul when he denied the Lord Jesus. For all such persons, Psalm 42 offers comfort and hope.
